Savage Services Coal Handler in Pueblo, Colorado

The Coal Handler primary responsibilities include general labor duties including but not limited to clean-up of equipment, work areas and grounds. Operate and perform general maintenance on equipment and grounds keeping. Unload Unit Trains and operate the coal handling system. The Coal Handler will report directly to the Team Leader.

  • Operates conveyor system to transport dry bulk products

  • Operates dozer/loader to move coal and feeder conveyor

  • Unload trains, and close railcar doors

  • Operates locomotive

  • Able to work rotating shifts and overtime as required

  • Startup, monitor, and shutdown equipment in accordance with applicable safety and environmental practices and policies

  • Completes visual and daily safety inspection of equipment to ensure safe operations

  • Performs shift inspection of equipment and communicate potential repair issues to shop mechanic

  • Operates equipment safely and efficiently to limit downtime and minimize costs

  • Performs routine maintenance such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning

  • Knowledge of operation of multiple pieces of equipment

  • Performs other tasks as instructed by supervisor

  • Basic understanding of material handling facilities and equipment including the associated components and maintenance thereof

  • Experience with project management and/or engineering

  • Knowledge of computers and related hardware/software; knowledge of computer networks and programmable logic controllers a plus

  • Above average spreadsheet and word processing skills

  • Ability to write in English coherently with proper grammar and tone

  • Able to see the “big picture”

  • Understanding of heavy, industrial equipment from an operating and safety perspective

  • Ability to manage projects from conception to final commissioning

  • Experience with a computerized maintenance management system a plus but not required

  • Willing to study and learn new technical skills and techniques

Education/Experience

  • High School or GED

Physical Requirements

This position works primarily in an outdoor environment with minimal to high concentrations of coal dust. Must be able to work in extreme weather such as; wind, heat, and cold. Must have the ability and willingness to perform the essential physical functions of the position:

  • Work at heights as well as climbing stairs and ladders

  • Lift up to 50 pounds

  • Lifting or moving objects over 50 pounds must be accomplished by either using extra manpower or machine-assisted lifting techniques

  • Required to wear proper personal protective equipment as environment and the position dictates

  • Required to pass annual OSHA respirator and pulmonary function tests

  • Able to wear a respirator
